What does XNote include without a paid subscription?
XNote Write comes with the Free XNote plan, at no recurring fee. The main reason to buy XNote, writing with real ink on XNote paper and keeping a searchable digital copy, doesn't sit behind a monthly payment.

The distinction matters: handwriting and audio are separate. The pen captures what you write, and it has no microphone. To record, use the XNote app on your phone, or send the meeting recorder to a Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams meeting. Handwriting never uses audio minutes. Recording laws differ by state and country. Tell everyone on the call that you're recording, and get their consent where the law requires it.
What is the Free XNote plan?
The Free XNote plan is the $0 plan that comes with XNote Write. It covers unlimited handwriting-to-text, AI chat with your notes, search, tasks and events, export and sharing, and printable pages. Some older XNote help articles call the free plan "Starter".
AI chat is included, with usage limits. The Free plan also includes 150 audio minutes a month, which count time you record with the XNote app, audio files you upload and meetings the meeting recorder records. Handwriting never uses minutes, so running out of audio minutes doesn't touch your pages: you can still write, sync, search and read what you saved.
One thing that surprises new owners: after you pair the pen, the XNote app offers XNote Pro. You can close it. Everything included with XNote Write keeps working.
When would you need an optional paid XNote plan?
Plans are optional and mainly for audio: more recording minutes, plus more workflows and summary templates. If XNote is mainly your notebook with a searchable digital copy, the Free plan may be all you need. If you record long meetings, interviews, lectures or client calls most days, a paid plan may fit better.
- Stay on Free if you mostly write, search and ask about your pages, with a few recorded meetings a month.
- Consider Pro if you record most days, or send the meeting recorder to your Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams meetings.
- Consider the top plan if you record more than Pro allows.
- Consider extra minutes if your recording is occasional but uneven, such as one busy conference month. Extra audio minutes are sold in the app.
Prices checked October 9, 2026 on XNote's plans: Pro is $19 a month or $99 a year, with 1,200 audio minutes a month, and the top plan is $249 a year, with the most audio minutes of the three. Prices in the App Store and Google Play may differ. Plans bought on xnote.ai arrive by email as a redeem code for the app.
Can you use the XNote pen without internet?
Yes, for writing. With no phone nearby, the pen stores up to 1,000 pages, and you import them next time you open the XNote app. With the app open and connected, your handwriting appears as you write.
Writing without a connection doesn't mean everything works offline. Handwriting-to-text and AI need an internet connection, and the first pairing needs internet too. A simple way to think about it:
- Write on XNote paper, even when your phone or the internet isn't around.
- Open the XNote app and reconnect the pen over Bluetooth.
- Import the stored pages into the right notebook.
- Once you're online, the app turns them into text you can search and ask about.

Do you need the XNote app even without a subscription?
Yes, for the digital side of XNote. The XNote app pairs the pen, imports stored pages, organizes your notebooks, searches your handwriting, exports pages and runs AI chat. Without it, the pen still writes like any ballpoint pen.
The XNote app works on iPhone and iPad with iOS 16.4 or later, Android 7.1 or later, or the web app at web.xnote.ai, which can pair the pen in Chrome, Edge or Opera. The first pairing needs internet. Phone not included. Check your device against the XNote Write page before you buy for an older phone, a managed work computer or a locked-down browser.
What happens if you cancel a paid XNote plan?
Your notes stay. XNote's plans page says you can cancel anytime: "Your plan stays active until the end of the billing period, and your notes stay in your account" (checked October 9, 2026).
What changes is how much new audio you can turn into transcripts each month. That makes a plan an optional capacity upgrade, not a rental fee for your handwritten archive.
What ongoing costs should an XNote buyer expect?
No subscription is needed, but XNote Write is still pen and paper. The realistic list:
- Paper: pages you print from the XNote app are free: you pay only for your own paper and toner on a laser printer, about 7 cents a page (5 to 10 cents) at US prices we checked on October 9, 2026. Inkjet prints can't be read by the pen. Or buy XNote notebooks: $19 (Mini), $29 (Standard) or $39 (Large), checked October 9, 2026.
- Ink: the pen takes standard D1 ballpoint refills (black, 0.8 mm). Five come in the box, and a pack of five is $12 (checked October 9, 2026).
- Optional audio: a paid plan or extra minutes if you record a lot.
- No laser printer? A print shop such as FedEx Office or Staples can print the app's pages, though a shop page costs more than a page of a bought notebook (what a print shop costs).

Important limitations before you buy
- No subscription doesn't mean no app. Handwriting-to-text, search and AI chat run in the XNote app.
- Writing offline isn't AI offline. The pen stores pages, but handwriting-to-text and AI need an internet connection.
- AI chat has usage limits on the Free plan. Paid plans raise them.
- Audio has a monthly allowance. 150 minutes a month may not cover frequent meeting recording, and unused minutes don't roll over.
- Paper must be XNote paper. The pen captures handwriting only on XNote notebooks, or pages you print from the XNote app on a laser printer.
- Plan details change. Confirm the price, allowance and billing period on XNote's plans page or in the app.
