Does XNote Work on Regular Paper? Printable Pages Explained

Quick answer: No. The XNote pen captures handwriting only on XNote paper: XNote notebooks, or pages you print free from the XNote app on a laser printer. On regular paper, or in a notebook you already own, it's just a pen: the ink lands on the page, but nothing reaches the XNote app. Printed XNote pages work on plain white US Letter or A4 paper because the app prints the pattern the pen reads onto every sheet. No laser printer? A print shop such as FedEx Office or Staples can print them for you.

Which paper does the XNote pen capture?

The XNote pen captures handwriting only on XNote paper, which comes two ways: XNote notebooks, and pages you print from the XNote app on a laser printer. The pen reads a tiny pattern printed on both. Every other surface gets ink, but no digital copy.

The short rule: the pen needs XNote paper, and the XNote app can print it for you. A grid or dots that look similar don't carry the pattern the pen reads.

Why does the XNote pen need its own paper?

The pen needs a printed pattern to know where it is on the page. The writing tip has a built-in optical sensor that reads the tiny pattern on XNote paper as you write (XNote's pen guide), and the pen sends every stroke to the XNote app over Bluetooth. With the app open and connected, your handwriting appears as you write. With no phone nearby, the pen stores up to 1,000 pages, and you import them next time you open the app.

Without the pattern, the pen has nothing to read. It still writes, because it's a real ballpoint pen with a standard D1 refill, but it can't tell which page you're on or where each stroke belongs. A ruled line or a dot grid in another notebook looks like a pattern, but it isn't the one the pen reads.

Printed pages add one detail: the app gives every sheet its own pattern and page number. So print each sheet from the app's PDF, and don't photocopy a printed page.

What "works on regular paper" actually means

When people ask whether XNote works on regular paper, they usually mean one of two things:

1. Can the XNote pen write on ordinary paper? Yes. It's a real ballpoint pen, and it takes standard D1 refills (black, 0.8 mm).
2. Will what I write on ordinary paper show up in the XNote app? No. Only XNote paper syncs. What you can do is print XNote pages from the app onto plain white printer paper, on a laser printer. Then that sheet is XNote paper.

So the paper in your printer tray isn't the problem. A blank sheet just has no pattern on it until the XNote app prints one.

How do you print XNote pages?

You make printable pages in the XNote app, then print them on a laser printer. Pages you print from the XNote app are free: you pay only for your own paper and toner, about 7 cents a page (5 to 10 cents) at US prices we checked on October 9, 2026 (how we priced a printed page).

1. Pick a layout in the app. Layouts include Daily Planner, Weekly Planner, Meeting Notes, Cornell Notes, Lined, Dot Grid, Grid, Log Sheet and Blank.
2. Choose how many pages, on US Letter or A4. The app makes a PDF with a unique pattern and page number on every sheet. You need internet to prepare and download pages.
3. Print on a laser printer at 100% (actual size). Print from a computer in a PDF app such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, and never choose "fit to page".
4. Write one test line. Check that it appears in the XNote app before you print a whole batch.

What printer and paper do you need?

You need a laser printer: inkjet prints can't be read by the pen. XNote's checklist for printed pages, from its printable pages (checked October 9, 2026):

• A laser printer, 600 dpi or better.
• Genuine toner. Refilled or remanufactured toner may not work.
• A PS or PCL printer driver.
• Plain white paper, about 21 lb bond (80 g/m²) or heavier. Standard 20 lb copy paper is lighter than this. No recycled, textured, colored or letterhead paper.
• ECO, draft, toner-saving and grayscale modes turned off.
• US Letter or A4, whichever you chose in the app.

No laser printer? Print at a shop

No laser printer? You can print the XNote app's pages at a print shop such as FedEx Office or Staples. Make the pages in the app, choose US Letter for a US shop, then upload the PDF to the shop's online print order or bring it on a USB drive.

Ask for black and white, single-sided, actual size (100 percent, not "fit to page"), 24 lb paper, laser output and no toner-saving mode. Staples' online order turns on "Scale to Fit" by default, so switch it off. No shop we checked says its machines are laser printers, so print one test page and try it with the pen before you order a batch.

XNote notebook or printed pages: which should you use?

The two work together: one pen, both kinds of paper. XNote notebooks come in Mini (3.54 × 5.51 in, 144 pages), Standard (5.83 × 8.27 in, 192 pages) and Large (6.93 × 9.37 in, 192 pages). A notebook is still the easiest choice for daily journaling, classes or recurring meetings. Printed pages help when a bound book is awkward, when pages must be filed or handed out, or when you want a specific layout.

Useful ways to work with printed XNote pages

Project and client binders

Print separate pages for each client or project, then file the paper behind the right divider. The digital copy stays searchable in the XNote app while the paper follows your filing system.

Meeting packets

Add Meeting Notes pages to a printed agenda, so the handwriting sits next to the documents everyone already has. If you also record the meeting, the XNote app or its meeting recorder does that: the pen has no microphone. Recording laws differ by state and country. Tell everyone on the call that you're recording, and get their consent where the law requires it.

Research and field notes

Loose Log Sheet pages are practical when notes need to travel with samples or a case file, or be rearranged later. The paper stays as you wrote it, and the copy in the app is easier to find and reuse.

Study worksheets

A printed Cornell Notes page can sit beside a problem set or reading packet. Once it syncs, you can search it and ask about it in the XNote app. Our guide to Cornell notes with AI shows the method.

A spare supply

If your notebook is full or left at home, a few printed pages keep you writing on XNote paper. Keep some tested sheets with your work things so you never fall back on a blank page that won't sync.

What won't work?

• Blank or lined paper, including a notebook you already own: the ink appears, but nothing syncs.
• Inkjet prints: they can't be read by the pen, even when the page came from the XNote app.
• Resized prints: "fit to page" shrinks the pattern. Print at 100% (actual size).
• Prints in ECO, draft, toner-saving or grayscale mode: XNote's checklist says to turn these off, and toner-saving lightens the pattern.
• Layout previews on xnote.ai: they're previews only. Print from the XNote app, so every sheet gets its own pattern and page number.
• Copies of printed pages, or patterns from another source: print each sheet from the app's PDF instead.

Troubleshooting a printed XNote page

If the ink appears but the page doesn't show up in the XNote app, check these in order:

1. Check where the page came from. It should be printed from the XNote app's PDF, not a preview, a copy or another file.
2. Check the printer. Laser, 600 dpi or better, genuine toner and a PS or PCL driver.
3. Check the print settings. Actual size, with ECO, draft, toner-saving and grayscale modes off.
4. Check the paper. Plain white, about 21 lb (80 g/m²) or heavier, not recycled, textured or colored.
5. Try one fresh test sheet. This separates a print problem from a pen or connection problem.
6. Import stored pages. If you wrote with no phone nearby, open the XNote app and import the pages the pen stored.

If a notebook page syncs but a printed page doesn't, the print is the likely cause. If neither syncs, check the pen's connection with XNote's connection steps.

Do printed pages work differently in the XNote app?

No. Once a printed page syncs, it works like a notebook page: unlimited handwriting-to-text, search, tasks and events, export, and AI chat with your notes.
